I know, I left without saying goodbye.

It was terribly rude of me – to leave for summer vacation without a word. But in defence of disappearing acts, sometimes the best way to unplug is not to announce it, but to simply vanish without the pressure to narrate it, post it, or explain it. Just go. And be. I’m beginning to think they’re the only real vacations left — the kind where you forget your inbox, your social media, your identity, even what day it is.

But anyhoo, greeting from Paris! I have returned to the city, where I’m writing this to you from the garden opposite Messy Nessy’s Cabinet.

I’ve just unloaded a trunk-full of treasures in the boutique (admittedly I did spend a good portion of vacation rummaging around brocantes during my annual zig zagging road trip of la douce France).

The city still feels a little sleepy, not yet fully switched on, but if you’re in town this September, let’s go ahead and start filling up our social calendar and plan a little get together for ‘la rentrée’.

Paula McClain, the NYT bestselling author of one of my favourite books, The Paris Wife, is passing through Paris this September, which struck me as the perfect excuse to host evening drinks and a book signing at the Cabinet. Pencil us in Tuesday September 9th, 6-8pm?

Think of it as a mini Paris Writers and Readers Club with Paula as our guest of honour, open to all, with drinks, nibbles and friendly faces. You can check out our new uniforms too. Tell your friends, save the date and I’ll remind you next week.

In the meantime, three things to do before summer is over…

  1. Apply for your own free private island for next summer

  2. Tango under the moonlight

  3. Celebrate the end of swimsuit season with a food-themed weekend road trip

And I’ll leave you with a long-overdue fresh batch of 13 Things, plus a few more conversation starters for the rentrée.

Here’s hoping for an Indian summer!

Stay curious,

Nessy
