If you know, you kno
The secret’s out. Sort of. The Cabinet has been unlocked, we’ve cut the ribbon and the new adventure has officially begun.
One unexpected side effect: the little audible gasps that sometimes come from visitors when they discover what’s hiding on the other side of the curtain. I still don’t quite know what to do with it, except quietly treasure it. Though if I could bottle that sound, I could most certainly live on it.
The irony, of course, is that our new secret lair behind the red velvet curtain at the back of the Cabinet may be a little too secret. If you know, you know. But if you don’t, we’re learning that perhaps a mysterious curtain in a curiosity shop requires something slightly less subtle than mystery alone — maybe a large flashing arrow saying: YES, YOU’RE ALLOWED TO GO THROUGH!
So perhaps you’ll tell a friend. Word of mouth is still going to mean everything to us. This is after all, an independent shop that exists both because of the internet (and in spite of it). And by design, I want visitors get that fleeting experience of wandering through the best and weirdest corners of the early internet – in the real world.
Thank you to everyone who has stopped by this past week to bless the new space, gasp appropriately, and make it feel alive! I hope to welcome the rest of you reading from afar.
In other news, next week I’m very excited to host our first Paris Writers & Readers Club in the expanded Cabinet. Lindsey Tramuta is our esteemed guest this month. Seats in person are fully booked — advance reservations for the club are always strongly advised — but you can still join us live via Zoom on October 15th at 6.30pm.
We’ll be taking notes from Lindsey’s very active career in writing and journalism, and talking about what it takes to keep thriving creatively in a world increasingly shaped by AI: how to protect your own voice, keep having original thoughts, and resist the temptation of the easy shortcut.
And finally, I found a quiet moment to sit down and compile a fresh volume of 13 Things I Found on the Internet Today. I promise I’m finding my way back to a regular rhythm.
For now, consider this your permission slip to wander through the curtain.
Stay curious,
Nessy
