Rabbit Holes, Safe Spaces and Future Doors to Narnia
If I’m honest, I’ve been putting this off. How do I just pop into your inbox with news of Paris and little things I found when it all feels so insignificant compared to what’s going on out there? How do we begin to soothe a fire that seems to be constantly raging in our hearts? I won’t tell you to switch off the news. In fact, a George Orwell quote has been lodged in my mind lately: “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
But when the world feels like a scary and unsafe place, I know I wouldn’t be doing us any favours if I ceased providing a place that you know you’re always welcome. One of the saddest things we can do is to censor ourselves. So here I am. A little late, but business as usual. Carry on, conductor.
Have a seat by the fire with a cuppa and take comfort in some mood-boosting rabbit holes to start off. Marvel at this traveling troupe of giant marionettes. Curl up for the secret history of the conversation chair. And as the fire crackles, indulge in a little nostalgia with our ode to the library card catalog.
I do have a pretty a big update for 2026 to share too. Through some mysterious twist of fate (and a bit of persistence on my part), a rather vast skylit space behind the Cabinet has become available. Our original little shop will remain exactly as it is, but the doorway at the back will serve as a sort of Narnia’s wardrobe into another realm of discovery. That’s all I should say for now, but stay tuned for a little demolition party invite sometime next month to break through the walls of our back office. And here’s to building creative havens despite it all.
In the meantime, if you stop by the Cabinet to see us this January, to celebrate the treasured French tradition, you can customise your own Galette des Rois charm bracelet from my own collection of vintage fèves.
Something to pencil into your diary this week: we’re live streaming our Paris Writers & Readers Club this Thursday 15th January, open to all as a New Year’s treat. Our special guest is Paris-based American author Robinne Lee, writer of the The Idea of You the spicy best-seller turned Hollywood movie starring Anne Hathaway. We’ll also be treated to an exclusive expert of her highly anticipated new novel TIME has named one its most anticipated books of 2026. To join remotely (6pm Paris time), find the link here.
And don’t forget to call on your concierge if you need any tips for livening up the rest of your winter nights.
In the meantime, tuck into bed with your 13 distractions, including a bonus entry at the end: a case for making art when the world is on fire.
Stay curious,
Nessy
