What no one tells you about running a business as a woman
It’s quiet hour at the shop. The last customer has drifted out into the Paris evening, all the lights are off, except for the green glow of my library desk lamp. And in the hush that settles after a day of conversation, footsteps, and curiosity, I’m sitting here thinking about what it means to be a woman running a women-led business.
I like to think of every month as Women’s Month, but when if not now, to dwell on the subject a little. So here we go, a few things I’ve learned…
A lot of the things women are taught to minimise turned out to be business strengths; things that give a business its identity, resilience and soul.
Boundaries protect creativity
A business with good values doesn’t mean the business doesn’t have ambition
It doesn’t have to be all triumph. In fact, it’s better if it isn’t. Lessons come from mistakes and failures.
Community is invaluable
Taste is a form of leadership. It is not frivolous — it’s strategy
Women are the unofficial keepers of detail
Not every conflict between women is a failure of sisterhood (nor does it need to become a Greek tragedy)
Being clear is often the most feminist thing you can do!
People-pleasing can quietly derail good working relationships
Scarcity, I think, might be the reason why collaboration is harder than it should be
Unlearn the need to over-prove yourself
We carry an astonishing amount, often while saying “no worries!”
Maybe these will be useful to someone.
“Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”
Many of the little-known women’s stories in my archives have guided my curation of curiosities and books at the Cabinet here in Paris. There’s one very special find under a glass cloche that often gets overlooked: some extremely rare 18th century banned books that reveal the mystery of history’s only female Pope.
In other news, there’s antique French fetish shoes, neo-druids and more waiting for you in this week’s 13 Things…
Stay curious,
Nessy
